Many people rent their homes, including myself. I happen to have a good landlord, who takes care of things when I let her know about them. When renters find mold in their home, they often let their landlord know. Last night, I got a call from a customer who described finding mold in their closet, following what had been an ongoing leak from the water heater in the adjacent utility room. The renters called us and scheduled an inspection so we could come out and assess the mold situation, as well as how to remove the mold safely. However, when they let the landlord know we were coming out to inspect the home, he had a different prescription. The owner of the property wanted the tenants to ‘spray bleach on the mold, and then wait a week.’ This is very common, and the urban myth of bleach’s mold fighting power still persist today. The only thing missing from the owners prescription was to take two aspirin! There is so much more involved in doing a proper mold remediation than simply spraying bleach on it. Often times, this will actually make the situation worse, because spraying bleach on mold disturbs the mold colonies and can cause mold spores to be released into the air. Make sure to contact someone that cleans up mold for a living to deal with your mold problem; relying on someone that rents houses for a living could cause you and your family problems.

When water starts coming out of your floor drain, or your basement level shower, and odors begin developing, your first thought may be to curse excessively! And that is perfectly normal! But what do you do next? A main-line sewer backup is a disgusting experience for anyone to go through, but don’t compound that by doing incomplete work. Industry standards (and common sense) says that anything porous, or absorbent, should be removed and replaced. Sewer water is categorized in the industry as ‘black’ water or ‘category 3′ water. Essentially, they are nicer ways of saying the water is grossly contaminated. It can have all manner of bacteria and viruses that are now present in your home. Removing porous materials allows us to get down to the structure to fully clean the affected areas. I also recommend my customers get the areas tested before allowing reconstruction to occur. Even if the area looks clean, microscopic nasties may still be present. Again, when your families health and safety are on the line, picking the lowest bid could have consequences down the road. Make sure you work with a certified company (We Are!), and if you have any questions, just give us a call!

Working in the business of mold remediation, it is amazing to hear the amount of urban legend, myth, out-dated methods, and outright lies that exist regarding how to properly take care of mold damage in your home. Some of it is well intentioned, in that it comes from family members, friends, or from news sources. Others make their own assumptions, but when I ask them questions, they seem to have no basis for having their opinions about mold. Another common response is “we’ve always done it this other way.” Mold research is ongoing, and staying up to date is very important. The more scientists learn about the effects of mold on people, the more questions are being created. There has been no simple answer as to cause and effect between mold and mold sickness in humans. In this vacuum of knowledge, and in the absence of laws (as opposed to asbestos or lead-based paint, which are federally regulated), unscrupulous business owners are free to sell whatever people are willing to pay for.

There are some key components of mold removal that all experts agree on: 1) Mold must be physically removed; there is no product that can be sprayed on or fogged on or applied that will ‘kill’ the mold and neutralize it’s effects while saving the material itself. This refers to everything except the structure, i.e. the framing and subfloor. All other materials, like sheetrock, trim, baseboards, flooring, etc that are contaminated with mold should be removed. 2) During the removal or disturbance of mold, proper engineering controls should be in place. This may sound easy, but it is far more than just putting plastic over the door in the room you are working in. Mold spores are microscopic, and mother nature designed them well! They are adept at staying airborne and can easily spread if proper controls are not put in place. In addition to containment barriers, using a HEPA-rated air filter to create negative air pressure inside the containment will help keep mold spores contained to the affected area. 3) Anyone working around mold, regardless of the type of mold present, should wear proper PPE (personal protective equipment). This includes HEPA-rated respirators, TYVEK suits, heavy duty gloves and the like. 4) Finally, the area should be thoroughly cleaned before taking down the containment barriers. I use what I refer to as a ‘white-glove’ test. Essentially, you want all horizontal surfaces where mold spores could settle to be completely dust free.

The four points I make above are all included in standards or guidelines provided by the EPA, OSHA, Air Canada, and several restoration industry groups. There is no magic dust to sprinkle on mold that they are aware of yet (we haven’t found it yet either, but stay tuned for more blog posts!) If you find a company that doesn’t agree with the 4 above points, be very wary! Within each of those points, you will find different methods to accomplish the same goals. Our company stresses testing, before and after the job, to document mold levels before and after our work. Again, because mold is microscopic, just because a job looks clean doesn’t mean that is the case. Whatever your needs are, be sure to work with mold professionals that are licensed and trained to do the necessary work. Taking the cheapest bid initially could end up costing you a lot more later, in addition to putting the health of all of those in your home at risk.

Your well being is one of the couple of things you can not restore once failed. The precise argument why we are more than eager to deal out some amount to establish the protection of our loved ones from the ever destructive molds that stay in the comfort of our homes. If you couldn’t concur more with it, well, guess what? There’s more to it.

We do not in fact should invest a lot to ensure that we are protected at home. There are mold remediation that are just a stone away. And yes, some of them are picked up in your kitchen and bathrooms.

Among the most famous mold killer is bleach. Bleach as we know can abolish not only molds but even the spores that they create that sooner or later develop into a fresh fungi or bacteria. While bleach works out in some non porous materials – and by this we indicate items that don’t have small holes in them– such as tiles, bath tubs, glass and countertops et cetera; it is on the other hand inefficient in some porous things like wood and drywall as it is unable to pass through the surface.

Vinegar, an ingredient that is often used when cooking, is amazingly among the products applied in eradicating fungus. Unlike bleach, vinegar is mild and non-toxic, but it is just as effective as it can terminate as much as 82 % of assorted type of molds. What’s more? It does not give off hazardous odor. To get free of molds with the help of vinegar, just spray the pure white distilled vinegar to the moldy area and leave it for an hour in order to come down to the surface. After the allotted time, buff the area with water and then let it dry. It is recommended that this procedure be repeated several times with a few days interval to make sure the area will stay free from the colored fungus.

Of all the mold eradicating essentials, tea tree oil is acknowledged as being the most powerful as it is also the most expensive. Despite the fact that it presents no harm to people and pets, a minute amount of which can kill all type of molds. To figure out that the tea tree oil you buy will give the desired result, make sure that it is taken from the Melaleuca Alternifolia. One teaspoon per cup of water is needed for the solution. Spray it in the affected area and leave the solution in the surface without flushing it.

Baby powder is one more product in just your reach that can be applied to dry out mold, particularly on paper. Just sprinkle an adequate amount of baby powder on the pages of your hand-me-down – but-valuable books, documents and other paper components that may be a residence place of these undesirable pests.

The next time you have the need to abolish the bound and determined fungus, try discovering mold remediation found within the four corners of your home prior to running somewhere else for practical men use the accessible resources for their own benefit. Are you practical enough?

It is worthwhile to become practical and smart , so check out our website for more mold removal products and information!

There’s certainly no place like home especially when such home is free from molds and other type of unwelcome guests. So, before you get to a point where your everyday dose of troubles with molds head out of hand, pick mold elimination QUICK!

Molds are plant-like, microscopic organisms that do not only aid in the breakdown of dead materials in the environment but also recycle nutrients found in nature. Not all varieties of molds are unsafe. In reality, some species are essential in the development of penicillin, fermenting drinks and manufacturing cheese. But the ones that grow inside our homes are not the kind of house guests we desire to stay.

Mold removal is the extermination of molds and their origin in a certain affected area of a building. But before we proceed, let’s be clarified of some key points about molds and mold development prevention. To start with, these fungi thrive in places where there is moist and little or no sunlight. Second, solving the trouble should be done at the grassroots level. It means: get rid of the source of the mold, not just the mold itself. Third, ensure that areas inside the house are properly ventilated. Leave doors and windows open whenever possible. Finally, invest in good-quality ventilating fans and dehumidifiers if you don’t have an adequate air flow system or the one that you presently have seems to be insufficient.

Now, let’s disembark to business with how to remove molds:

Step 1. Seal off the room affected with plastic and tape prior to starting the mold removal. Ensure that there is a window nearby for easy exit of utilized mold cleaning products and your clothing. Walking through the house to discard them is such a bad idea.

Step 2. Take maximum caution as to not spread the condition to other areas. Mold ovums easily find their way to clothing and materials.

Step 3. Moisten down the affected zone to limit the spreading of spores. Clean the area with soap and water. Then, sterilize with the use of bleach. Rinse the area and dry immediately.

Step 4. Upon completing the task, do remove all clothing & cleanup materials through a close-by exit or window. Take each precaution needed. Do not spread the mold spores!

Step 5. For exposed wooden surfaces in the room, sand them down to remove any mold that might have stuck in its surface. Vacuum the area thoroughly and open the windows to get some fresh air into the room.

Step 6. Keep an air cleanser available upon finishing the task. Air quality should be a key concern. Eliminating mold growth caused by water damage is important not only to the materials involved but more so for one’s health. Take the time to seal each area of your house particularly the basement as well as the shower and bath areas.

The home is where almost all people feel most secured. It is almost everybody’s relaxation zone and it is revered that there’s no place in the world that could beat someone’s own home, so safeguard from the threats of molds. Black mold remediation is your best choice towards maintaining a healthy home.

Before buying a new home, many people want to know if what they’re purchasing is a good value, and what potential problems may exist. Home inspection is a relatively new field, and as such, there is a vast difference in the services provided. A good home inspection should cover all of the major areas, like your HVAC system, foundation, etc. However, a few are starting to check for mold. This is very important, because mold spores are microscopic; the only time you can see them is when they colonize and grow. Over the last few months, I have seen several homes that we have done work on, where the mold was covered up so that the home could be sold. With an air quality test, even though the mold is “hidden”, it can be found. If you are buying a new home, check with the home inspector, and see if that is something they offer as part of their service. If not, I would strongly recommend that you get your home tested before purchasing, to prevent buying a home that comes with a built-in disaster!

Due to the truth that we are just ordinary human-beings, we can not simply wave a wand and make the filthy tiny greenish black fungus disappear into thin air. We are but just a poor picture of a boy wearing eyeglasses with lightning bolt inscribed on his forehead. Let us all rouse and smell the coffee; when it pertains to mold inspection, we can not just take the issue resting.

Around in our own home– regardless of how impeccably hygienic it may seem– at least a type of fungi is identified. Here are some self-help steps toward stopping the persistent life jeopardizing fungus in two critical areas at home– the bathroom and the basement:

Bathrooms are more often than not wet. The aforementioned fact combined with inadequate air circulation is the major reason why this part of the house is a home for molds. To properly address this matter, the source of this type of fungi must be found and fixed– a leaky faucet, roof, or pipe– not just the mold per se. When you’re sure there’s a drip, but for some reason it is hard to pin-point where the root cause is, it is encouraged to seek the help of the people in authority– a plumber for example to exterminate the stubborn fungus.

Dampness is not the only problem, ventilation as well. Thus, mounting an exhaust fan is an excellent help to improve the air circulation. Contrary to the usual practice, we must keep the bathroom door open when vacant. That way, fresh air can get in. If the ventilation system is too old or not enough to enhance the airflow, it is more practical to change it with a new one.

Bathrooms and basements have a common denominator; both have the liability to deal with inadequate ventilation and inappropriate air circulation. A very damp and extremely hot atmosphere to include in lack of airflow is justification enough for mold to flourish in this type of environment. Just like what was said earlier, the cause of Stachybotrys chartarum and other kinds of fungus must be confronted, not simply just the mold itself. Since poor ventilation is the main issue, if possible as it is deem crucial, a fan must be installed or an opening window to increase airflow. The dose of moisture must also be regulated. To keep the moisture level down, a dehumidifier comes in handy, especially in spring and summer seasons in the darkest side of the house. In cases wherein you want to enhance air quality, setting up of air purifier in addition to dehumidifier will generate the best outcome. The air purifier eliminates all the unclean stuff like allergens, molds, dust and other awful things from the air.

Some people are willing to cash away a lot of their hard-earned money just to get rid of the stubborn molds so they hire experts to carry out the job. While there are those who are on a tight funds and manage to do it on their own. Remember, like anything in life, we commonly have a selection. So why shell out loads of bucks for mold inspection if we can sweat our way out and save some money for the rainy days?

Just recently, I was called out to a home late on Saturday night. The family was just renting the home, and their daughter left the hose running in the backyard after she got water for the dogs. The family went out for a few hours; when they got back, there was the equivalent of an ice-skating rink out front, and the basement was completely flooded, with several inches of standing water. I called a few guys to help, and we headed out. Once we got to the home, we discovered that the people who called us out were tenants, and not the owners of the home. We helped to notify the owners so they could file an insurance claim to take care of the damages. The tenants assumed that since it was going through insurance, their furniture and personal possessions would also be taken care of. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The owner of the home did have homeowners insurance, but it only covered the structure of the home. If you own your own home, you will have coverage on your homeowners policy to cover your personal property. However, if you are just renting a home, you will need to get renters insurance to cover all of your ‘stuff’. This can be a very expensive lesson if the house you are renting burns down and takes all of your possessions with it. Or floods and ruins everything you own. I never carried renters insurance until I started doing restoration work; I highly recommend it to anyone out there renting, the cost is very affordable and the protection is well worth it.

As we are getting into the winter season, make sure your roof is in good shape. Older roofs need maintenance from time to time, and a leaky roof can be a big problem. Roof leaks don’t often produce a ton of water inside the home, like a broken pipe would, so they aren’t always immediately noticeable. Often, by the time they are noticed, the problem has been on-going for some time, and in the process some mold has developed. So just a word to the wise, as more snow will inevitably fall this winter, make sure when it melts, it stays outside like it’s supposed to, and doesn’t have an easy path into your home.
